I've owned all the recent Jap 1000's bar the R1, and have wanted a big twin for a while, I want something different and have decided on the 1098, how different are they to ride, I've heard conflicting things, anything that I should know before buying one? I'm test ridding both the 848 and the 1098 next week, but would love some input from other riders. Thanks people.

You say you are testing riding both, hopefully that will give you your answer, I changed years ago from riding a ZXR750L1 to a 916, kept it about 2 years, I had no problems with it when I first got it and thought it was great almost telepathic in its handling but something changed whether it was tyres or not I don't know, then the power delivery became an on/off switch at low speeds and the only time it felt good was for about 100 miles after a service it then proceeded to completely destroy my confidence on a bike, so I went back to a ZX7R to slowly rebuild my confidence and now have an R1 which is just ballistic and much smoother since fitting a Power Commander.
It was also never as fast as they made out I'm not a small person about 6'3" and struggled to get more than 140 mph out it, had it dyno'd to check the power it made, which was right on the money at the time and yet could get 160 mph out the Kawasaki's making similar power, go figure. If you like it great, reports basicaly say the 1098 is an animal and the 848 alot smoother, ride them for as long as you can and make certain you can live with them.
Just don't rush into it.

I love the Ducati 1098 in Tri Color. Trouble is that riding position and my knees are no long compatible and I would have trouble "getting down" due to some girth. I don't quite resemble the guy in the Ducati ads. I'm committed to Honda but ..... the Duc will cost some more and be a little more fragile and have a little more maintenance cost but what the heck, it would be worth it! Life is short - do it!

The 08s are reputed to be free for the frequent, mandatory valve adjustments. I'm pretty sure these bikes are free of the bucket of bells (dry) clutch.

go to youtube and search for MCN they have some great tests of the 1098 and give impressions of what it's like to ride

In my 32 yrs of riding, which includes road racing in club races, W.E.R.A AMACCS, I have own all the jap sportbikes, honda 600 huricane, yamaha fzr600,400, and the RZ500 V4, gsxr750, 2001 ducati 748, and my beloved 94 900cr. They are very different, when i first rode my buddies 900cr (which i now own) i was hooked. the ducati sunk its teeth in me, and i was loving it. I later bought the 748. But hey thats me, after that i just knew i want something different. If you want more bang for your buck, then the jap sportbikes will win you over hands down. If you truely want something different, then a ducati or even the APRILIA will do the trick. but mostly the ducati with its stellar look, and supermodel body. Add an aftermarket slip-on pipe, and it will make a sound that will grab the attention of any living thing on this EARTH. A sound that is more convincing than britney spears whispering in your ear... come _ _ _ _ ME. Sure jap bikes of same displacement are faster, and less maintenance, but the feeling u get from the ducati tells you with out a doubt, you have a real motor underneath you. This is just my opinion, but jap sportbikes are smooth and almost effortless, kinda like an automatic, they are so easy to ride fast that, even more and more girls can ride them just as quick as thier male counterparts, they can become almost boring to ride on a straight line highway. A ducati to me, is more like a stick shift, you have to work with it, and it rewards you with the kind of feel and sound only a ducati can offer, not to mention the constant attention you will get from on lookers. and you will never have to give some outrageous paint job, the ducati design team has done that work for you. Those paint jobs you see on those bikes on that show SUPERBIKERS Those wont work on a ducati. You can mess up an already award winning look.WARNING! BEWARE OF BULLS. unless your ducati is yellow, blue, or black. So, ride a gsxr1000, R1, or FireBlade then ride a 1098 or 848, or even one of the CLASSICS, or ST4.
