Jack Elam,villian in over 50 westerns,died on 20 October.

Remembered in such films as Rawhide,Once Apon A Time In The West,High Noon, Support Your Local Sheriff,He was the swivel-eyed character who usually ended up dead by the second reel.

A great character on and off the screen,he'll be sadly missed by all western fans.

I have to confess that although the name rang a bell I had to look him up on the net before I realised who he was.

I agree - a sad loss. I wonder if westerns are going the same way as Jack Elam? Off the top of my head I don't remember anything of real quality since Clint Eastwood's The Unforgiven which was made at least 10 years ago. Although I'm not a western fan per se I am saddened by the decline of the genre. :(

Jack Elam and the fly at beginning of Once Upon A Time' brilliant ! don't have to watch rest of film. I would pay for a Western channel, there is enough content out there.

He was one of those actors that made it possible for other actors to shine. I liked him the most as the doctor-with-the-finger in Cannonball Run.

I think Unforgiven was such an overwhelming movie that it is very hard to top it..
The only Western movies I liked after Unfiorgiven are The Quick and the Dead and Maverick.
And I would not mind seeing more Western being made..

never been a big western fan, although I have to say that Jack Elam was a great actor and it was a shame that he became somewhat typecast in his roles. :(
