Guys - I'm on the fence about replacing both front and rear stock speakers in my 2010 Ultra. I do not intend to go the amp route - so my question is simple for those who have swapped all four speakers to the J&M's on the stock head unit only...

Was it worth the time and money for the improvement in sound while riding?

absolutely,,,,, with all the hype lately over the new J&M amps, it is very easy for many of us to forget just HOW MUCH of a difference it makes when just upgrading the speakers themselves to the new J&M's ,,,,

7.25s in the front and performance 5.25s in the rear ,,,,, they are a substantial improvement over anything else out there and in fact, speakers only are chosen by a vast majority of the Ultra riders ,,,,, I think close to a 95% ratio of riders replace the speakers only with the J&Ms, compared to those who add the amp also ,,,,,

don't get me wrong, the J&M amp IS cool ,,,,, but the speakers themselves are really COOL too ,,,,,,,,
 
Here is my experience with both Dr Vtwin and J&M. I bought the speakers first and then decided I needed an amp too. I ordered both from DRVtwin. The amp was one of the first ones shipped out for the Roadys. Got it all installed and it wasn't any better than stock.
I called the DR and they offered to ship me new speakers and amp as they were really concerned that I was unhappy. The Dr suggested that since I live in Tucson where J&M is located that I go see them first and see what they could come up with.
Now remember I bought all this from the Dr so I really had no expectations from J&M. All I can say is WOW. J&M took my bike into thier garage and took it all apart and discovered that just a few of the first batch of amps didn't have the gain turned on. They adjusted everything and decided just to be safe also replaced my speakers with new ones.
So I want to give props to both the DR & J&M as both their customer service went above and beyond.
Oh, and now this thing rocks.
 
Got my speakers at the tail end of last year, . . due to things in my life I was unable to install them, well that changed yesterday! They are great, I feel that my $ was well spent and am happy with the instructions, the install and the quality. Thanks to J&M and also to Dr. V-Twin for the great customer personalization when I bout these last year.
 
Received my order of speakers and amp from Dr. V-Twin this afternoon and went to work on the install. Took my time and as this was the first time I needed to remove the gas tank, I was a bit nervous. Now I didn't actually take it off the bike, but I followed the steps in the manual, and short of taking off all the connections (I did take off the fuel line with the quick disconnect......that was fun!) all I did was lay a nice large blanket over the rear and swung the gas tank around and layed it there. I'm glad I did it, because now the power and ground cable are neatly tucked in the wire tray and I wont have to worry about that in the future.

Everything came off smoothly and went back together smoothly. I opted not to used the enclosed sponge fairing material, as I had previously put some Dura-mat (I think that is what they call it) stuff I got from an audio store in an attempt to make the stock speakers sound better in the fairing already. If theres a definite reason why I should use the sponge stuff, somebody pls. let me know.

After all was back together, I briefly tested it in the garage, but I needed to get out on the road and hear for myself. I gotta say, I am pleased with the sound quality and volume. For some reason, I have the AVC on full 4 bars and it sounds better than having it turned off as some have mentioned in earlier posts. I also have my bass set at -2 from the halfway point, and the treble is at -2 also from the halfway point. I will probably tinker and adjust before I settle on it for good.

I have a few things to ask those who have more experieince with this stuff than I and that is on the side of the amp that has the plug for the speakers, there is a push button that said something like rca or something like that. It came pushed in, is that where it should be? And there is a white sticker over I guess some adjustment screws......should those be adjusted or just leave them alone?

I do have to say the music I was playing pretty much drowned out the exhaust noise! Loud, crisp and clear with no distortion.
