J&M 7.25 Speaker Review

I didn't end up posting SPL, although I measured (C/Slow). They were only around 1-2dB louder at "unity" (50/50/50) with pink noise on the meter.

That said - The human ear is a lot different than the meter... And the difference in apparent volume using normal program material, along with the sheer 'crankability' of the J&M's was more than impressive.

For the helluvit, I'll see if I can dig up those numbers though...

I have gone back and forth with my opinion on the J&M speakers. My first comments were that I thought they were a little pricey. I went ahead and bought a set and for the workmanship that has gone into the product the price seemed fare, but they also must sound good also.

I installed them and they sound a lot better that the stock as far a music quality listening in the garage.

I still contend that they are not loud enough when riding. I did a 1K ride this weekend and it was cold and windy. I rode with a 3/4 helmet and switched to a 1/2 helmet when it finally warmed up. They are just not loud enough driving at highway speeds.

So my conclusion is that they are better than stock sitting in the garage but at normal highway speeds they are no better than stock. You can't hear either well on the highway so they both rate the same. Will an amp help? I don't know. But I know before I spend any more money on this quest I will do a lot of research.

I also don't like the way they fit in the bike. It makes it difficult to install the the outter shell of the faring. The adapters should not have been made so deep. 1/4 of and inch narrower would be perfect.

My goal my to be able to hear better at highway speeds. Did I get what I wanted? Short answer, no. Maybe I just need an amp?

PTAG,

How are your treble and bass levels set? At highway speeds, it is best to keep the bass down to 2-3 bars and the treble at around 3-4 to ensure that you get clear and loud sound.

This is what I do and at 80 MPH, it is plenty loud and clear. I only have the volume up to 75% of the way up too. I also wear a full face helmet, so the speakers do perform.

Shawn,

I have tried them at several settings. If they are that marginal in the setting of the radio then they need to be louder. Before John or anyone else jumps in; I want to state they are good speakers. They just didn't meet my goals. I am hoping an amplifer will do the job but I don't plan on spending $500 for an amp either. If that's what it takes I just quit where I am at.

I'm really surprised by this post. My bass is probably at the 2-3 bar mark but I have to turn my treble All the way up for it to sound good. My biggest problem with them is they sound a little flat or muffled (probablly not the right words) and the only way to make them sound good is with treble high.

Ive had the outer fairing off a few times for other things and doubled checked the wiring more than once to make sure it was good.

I think the one in your showroom you played for me sounded better because of the hogpod tweaters it had on it. Seems like by turning down the treble your loosing that sound everybody is looking for when they install tweeters?

Im not a stereo guy but will the amp make it sound better or just louder?

Just a thought but what kind of windshield are you running? I put an 8" Half-Moon Wings windshield on my SG and it made a world of difference in the stock speakers. Now with the J&Ms the stock radio will drown out the V&H pipes at highway speed.

First off...I don't want to insult anyone's itelligence by telling them something they already know....

But if you want to really make your speakers (even the stock setup) sound better at highway speed...use ear plugs...yes ear plugs. Once you knock down all of the offending extra noise (wind/pipes...etc), you'll be amazed at how well it will sound....

found that to be very true this past weekend.
i found that after a couple miles everything started sounding like crap so i stuck in my ear foamies and was amazed how much extra noise was removed, but the radio was much clearer.

With regards to muffling the background noise in order to make the audio from the speakers more audible; I would have to agree that does help. But I also notice by muffling the background noise, you also lose some frequencies from the music.

To me, while the audio was louder when muffled, the music was flatter and lost allot of the highs. The highs can be recovered sometimes by increasing the Treble.

So muffling helps in loudness but hinders the music overall....in my opinion.

My setup consists of 6 1/2 inch speakers and an amplifier. Both from Biketronics. The gain in sound output was significant witout any losses in music quality. I needed louder output because of the D&D Boss exhausts. I'm talkin' LOUD.

Hey, I just noticed that the 7.25" speakers for the RG are listed on the J&M website?

Who's the best source? I've also heard they're planning to introduce a new amp in early '10. I didn't see that on the J&M website....probably still too early.
