J&M 7.25 Speaker Review

I got my speaker from DR V-Twin today.

I will have to say the quality is fantastic like all J&M products. They didn't skimp on the packaging which is important when shipping speakers.

I have only run them in the garage so far. I can turn the radio up all the way with the bass and treble set at mid point. It does distort a little at full volume but I suspect the radio and not the speakers. They take the power just fine up to the last couple of notches which is why I think it's the radio distorting. I can definitly tell the difference in mid's and highs; and so can my neighbors as these things are loud. I can't imagine anyone needing an amp. What up with all the talk of amps? Why would you want one with as loud as these things are?

I am doing a 300 mile trip tomorrow, mostly highway, so I'll report back how they work on the road at speed. I can see that a lot of time went into the design of these speakers, thus the cost.

I also like my DR-Vtwin shirt. Thanks Shawn.

I just got back from a 300 mile ride. Mostly highway. The new speaker are definilty better than the stock speakers. I am not sure I would say day and night difference but certainly better. I listen to mostly 60's and 70's music (showing my age) via satellite radio plugged into the AUX of the radio. I used to have to listen a while in heavy wind to figure out what some was playing. Now only a couple of seconds. I was doing 75 to 80 mph most of the way. The wind way not too bad but at 75 and 80 with a half helmet it still beat my ears up so that might have made some difference.

Most of the time I had the volume at 3/4 and above. I now see why an amp might be useful. Where do you guys mount them?

At 65 to 70 they sound great. I am not sure any speaker would sound good at 80 with wind. If it did it would be louder than I would want to listen to.

So, would I do it again? Probably, but not sure. They are better than stock but not as good as I expected.

The quality is great and the chrome shining through the grills look good.

That's my honest opinion so don't jump down my throat. I tell it like it is.

PTAG ,,,,,

don't ever be afraid to tell it like it is ,,,, the J&M 7.25's are the best sounding speakers for your fairing WITH or WITHOUT an amp, but you are correct, at some speed or wind conditions you may want even more ,,,,

let me ask you to go into your menu options on your sat radio receiver and see what your line-out volume is set to ,,,,,,

then reduce it by half, then crank your Harley HK radio volume control to MAX, then adjust the sat radio line-out volume back up one notch at a time, till you get to the edge of distortion ,,, then leave the sat radio set that way and see if the speakers sound even better at highway speeds ,,,,

also ,,, turn off your auto-volume adjust feature on the Harley radio ,,,,,,

John,

I'll give that a try. I did notice that when I switched to regular FM radio that it did sound better. I didn't figure this out until I was also home and doing 40 mph. I had the satellite 1 notch from full open and I have the AVC on. You are probably onto something. I will try it and post back here in a day or so.

I do agree that there is nothing better available than your product. I also don't expect it to sound like a stereo system in a car while at speed.

Thanks for your advice.

Harold

For the chosen few, thanks for the write ups so far...they sound like a great product. I think there is one more tester to go so I have a few suggestions I which I was thinking about doing if picked:

1. Weight the difference between the OEM and J&M 7 1/2s

2. Take some side by side pics of the speakers and installed

3. Install only 1 J&M and do a comparison video....same volume/settings, and change the balance from left to right.

4. Some lessons learned following the instructions

First of all I am not a tester and would not be one unless I was allowed to buy the product and say what I wanted. I bought and paid for mine based on the reviews I had seen here.

1. I am not sure about the weight difference. What would that matter? There is a lot more here than just the speakers. Adapter, padding, etc.

2. There have been several pictures of the new setup to compare with what you have now. The size difference in the speakers is massive. They are a lot larger and the grills have the tweeters built into them.

3. I don't think the Harley radios have a left and right fader control, just a fade between front and rear.

4. The instructions are perfect. The quality of the kit and the parts provided make the installation a breeze. This all assumes you are capable of taking the faring off your bike. If you have not done this before or are not comfortable doing it; then let someone else do it. I know of people that have screwed up the faring by making the screws too tight and pulling the threaded parts out of the faring, breaking wires, etc. It's not the end of the world but you get what I am saying.

Anyway, I hope my review was not taken out of context. The system is great and the quality is the best in the industry. They sounds tons better than the stocks. IMO, it always seems like testers give good reviews on everything they test. It is in their best interest and I don't take much stock in them.

It is kind of like seats. I love my Sundowner as where the guy I bought it from thought I was a sucker for buying it from him. He hated it. I would think the same goes for sound. I don't really care about the fidelity as much as being able to understnd the words. I told you guys I listen to 60's/70's music where you could hear the words I also listen to the news a lot and talk to my riding buddies on the CB. I did listen to the CB and it was a huge difference which is more important than the music to me. Everybody looks at products from different ways. That is why if you are going to use testers you need to pick a variety of testers and understand how they will be tested. You just don't send products to anybody to test. I am not saying that's what was done with these speakers. I am just stating my views on how I would do it. J&M is very sucessful so I am sure they know what they are doing. The main reason I use their products is the quality and durability.

Final thought:

I have used J&M products for years. I still have some of there CB stuff in the garage from my old bikes, and the J&M handlebar speakers with the built in amps. I also own a 09 Heritage Classic that I am going to put these on. As we all know their headsets are the best around. I have been using them for 10+ years and never a failure.

One thing I can say for sure is I love motorcycling a lot and enjoy all the add-on goodies that these companies make.....
