I've just plugged in our old VCR with a scart lead into our new TV and it doesn't work?

I have used a scart lead from my DVD player to ensure a good connection as I don't have a cable with the yellow, red and white connections on them, the VCR is running smoothly but even after flicking through what seems all the channels, I still can't get this it to work.
Can anyone help please?
