The phrase you give is from that time several decades ago when technology (radio, TV sets) went beyond mere "on/off" switches and became more complicated. At the same time children were learning about computers and similar...so adults (semi-jokingly created the phrase to suggest that the next-door 5-year-old could program the VCR but adults couldn't. It suggested the widening gap between people who hadn't grown up on such technology and those who had (children).

And yes, a lot of people have a problem with "logical thinking," often substituting "mistaken thinking" based on the major logical fallacies or simply on their own desires, excuses, or justifications. I don't know what that has to do with VCRs however.
