ive had sex multiple times and it still hurts to put a tampon in, whats wrong?

ive had sex with my boyfriend many times and it doesnt hurt too bad but i would think when i try and put a tampon in, it would be easy but it isnt. i cant wear them because it hurts too bad or they dont go in all the way. i tried to see if i was doing it wrong but im not, so whats the problem?
