So about ten weeks ago i started getting hives ive been to like 8 doctors the only thing that seems to help but for some reason has stopped helping is Zyrtec. I take one a day along with zantac witch appears to do nothing. I also was on predniozone witch totally got rid of them but as soon as i went off them they came right back. Now they want me to try taking two zyrtecs a day along with a singulair. But waiting to see if my insurence will cover singulair?? The one problem i have is if the itching is under controll its livable but my face keeps swelling up.. mostlly my lips and i look like a weirdo..If anyone can give me any helpful hint it would be great. Also has anyone figured out if this has been caused by stress for them and if so what did they do for it ??

A few things to try, if you havent already:

Use Cetaphil in the shower instead of soap/bodywash

Double rinse all your laundry (run it through two rinse cycles)

No perfume/body lotion etc

It might be worth asking your doctor about Doxepin - it is an old antidepressant from the 1960's, but it has recently been found to be the most powerful antihistamine ever discovered. Its dirt cheap ($4 prescription) and often works wear other antihistamines have failed. It can make you drowsy though. Might be worth asking your doctor about it.

I had a friend with hives that lasted for months with no apparent reason for them. She was started on 1 Zyrtec a day and then upped to 2 a day and it worked. And now with it being available as a generic, it is so cheap that it makes sense to try.

I have such bad seasonal allergies I take 2 most days. Makes you tired at first but you do adapt to it. My allergist had me try the new cousin of Zyrtec, Xyzal and it did nothing.....and was VERY expensive.

Try the 2 Zyrtecs as long as you've got them on hand.

PS. idiopathic hives(hives for no reason that can be found) is more common that you think.

Before trying drugs such as doxepin, which have significant side effects, you might want to try simply updosing the traditional non-drowsy antihistamines, such as generic Zyrtec and generic Claritin. I also thought they weren't working, but then I tried taking 40 mg of each daily, in addition to 300mg of Zantac. I've been virtually hive-free for eight months. It's a big dose, but a safe dose, per my doctor.

Eversince since I was a kid, I have been having hives. Even when I was already is highschool and college. In my adult years, I still get it sometime. I remeraber my doc also prescribed prednisone when I was only 8 years old. The recent was just last week. I remeraber I get this when I am so stressed. I don't go to the doctor anymore since I know what meRAB they will be giving me so I ought to buy my own med. Claritin always works for me. Whenever I get hives, I just take 1 tab of Claritin and after a while, its gone. I am already used to getting hives so I know what to do. Maybe you can try Claritin (generic name is Loratidine, i think).

6 years ago I woke up, took my shower and noticed when I got out that my hanRAB were itchy and I had hives. They went away shortly after. The next day I had hives on my hanRAB and my feet then shortly after I had them everywhere. After visits to every doctor I could find to help me I was taking Zyrtec and Benadryl to help with the itching but they could not test me for allergies because I couldn't stay off of the antihistamines so the testing would not work.

4 months later I remerabered a friend who had told me about a doctor who practiced western and eastern medicine so I got his nuraber from her. He did some testing on me and it came back and showed that I had a severe allergy to dairy products of all kinRAB. His testing was done at a different level that regular allergy doctors don't believe in but guess what? If I don't eat dairy, I don't have problems with hives. I did not eat dairy for 2 years and couldn't even have soy because my body thought it was dairy. Thankfully now I can have soy and I eat dairy on occasion but my body rejects the dairy in my digestive system so I pay for it when I do it. I have gotten too lax in my dairy consumption and have actually broke out in hives all over my legs one time about a year ago - that was enough to get my attention so I limit it to every now and then. Boy do I miss lasagna!!!

So, you may want to find an alternative doctor who thinks outside the box - normally insurance doesn't pay for these doctors but I would have paid anything to know what was causing the itching so I could make it stop - it was the best money I've ever spent.

I wish you well.

Dana
