recession what are you doing? I am off tomorrow and I am going to stay home until I have to go back in on Wed. I am trying to save on groceries by using coupons and eating leftovers. Finally, we are not going to Florida for vacation this year. The next step is to buy a timer for the hot water heater and the heating system.

Eat at home instead of going out to eat.
Don't do needless driving.
Buy groceries based on the specials that week.
Don't try to keep up with anyone!

I am driving less--trying to combine trips and/or do without. We have already done some energy-efficiency measures to the house, but I am trying to be more careful about leaving lights on and setting the thermostat, etc. I am doing as much shopping and bill-paying as I can online to save on trips to stores, postage, etc. We have just about completely given up eating out at restaurants, and I scrimp and save on groceries every way I can. I hardly ever pay full retail for clothes and other household goods if I can help it--I shop sales, outlets, garage sales, thrift stores, etc. or do without.

We are also growing a pretty large vegetable garden this year and hope to have enough for ourselves as well as to share with relatives/friends or possibly barter for other goods and services. This fall, my husband will likely kill a deer and/or a wild hog which we can use for meat for the family, and we have also considered purchasing a cow or other livestock to raise for our own use. At this point, it wouldn't be cheaper than buying meat in the store, but at some point it would start to be cost-effective, especially if we could breed a pair and sell the offspring.

All our autos are paid off and we don't have a lot of debt other than home mortgage and rent property mortgage which are at very good rates, so hopefully we will be in good shape. If I do purchase another vehicle, I plan to try and find one that is either a hybrid or significantly will improve the fuel economy over our current vehicles.

Live simple. I have always lived simple, even in good times. Jesus Christ and Henry Thoreau preached the wisdom of a simple life. Luxuries of the Donald Trump's class are trash for me.

I am trying to sell my house. I have done all of what you said, and have done most for a while. I am also trying to eat less at lunch, and don't bring a drink for the most part. I am also trying to take shorter showers, and have been buying jeans from a second hand store. Finally, I look for sales, and I buy my own things when I can (rather than asking my mother.)

I did most of this stuff from before the recession, but it is just more important now.

prob the exact same way you would save during a non-recession period.

An american recession has more to do with the mortgage crisis and bank failures than you not being able to maintain your standard of living. At least for right now anyways... we're a long ways away from any type of depression.
