iTunes won't recognize my iPhone when I plug it in. What should I do?

I have an iPhone, and whenever I plug it in to the computer it won't come up on iTunes. Also, my sister has my old iPod and it's always worked on iTunes. I've tried leaving it in over night, uninstalling iTunes and re-downloading it and using other connection cables, but nothing seems to work. What should I do?
