iTunes and Windows Media doesn't recognize ipod touch?

I know how to get on it with Wi-Fi, but can you just connect it to your computer with a USB cord and get online? It also seems that both iTunes and Windows Media Pleayer don't recognize my ipod touch.
 
Firstly, Windows Media Player was never written to detect an iPod of any sort. Secondly, no, you can't connect to the internet on your iPod touch if it's connected to your computer.
