It seems very few new movies from each year make the top 250 all time greats

If you use IMDB like I do, it is easy to see that few films from each year ever make the grade into the top 50 slots.

It must be a difficult industry knowing that such a well known database exists that is based on user comments and ratings without much influence from real critics.

I always use it as a guide only......because sometimes I absolutely disagree with some ratings and wonder why the ratings can be low or high for a particular film.

But regardless of our own personal opinion, I'm pretty sure that filmmakers are aware of this website and its overall influence on viewers.

What do you think of the top 250? Do you agree with the top ten placements?
 
I've seen 7 of the top ten......

I really have problems rating movies.
A rating by genre I'd prefer.

Godfather I + II are THE gangster movie
Shawshank Redemption best prison movie.


For what it's worth I don't think Hollywood produce more than 1 or 2 good movies a year.
 
Lol....the only one that I haven't seen is the Star Wars one :o

I just hate Sci Fi type stuff.

But that said, my son convinced me to watch one of the Lord of the Rings movies (god knows which one....but it was great)

So I can safely say that I have watched all but one. :D

As to whether I agree with the order or not....well yes, I do.

Because they all have a certain punch to them.....and I absolutely love all of these movies........even though in the next 10 in the category have some of my favourites in it. :)
 
There are a handull of movies in the IMDB top 250 I perosnally don't like with but it seems pretty representitive of the serious film viewer community.

I have no idea how the ratings work though. They have different ratings in the list than overall. I think a film has to recieve a certain amount of votes from regular users to be considered.

It's no wonder most films don't get in the list now. Last year I only saw two truly great films. This Is England and Into The Wild.
 
IT's a bit like the music industry - it's all about profit now.

Also, CGI has destroyed the business. Would Jaws have worked as well with a CGI shark? No. Can you imagine what Back To The Future and Ghostbusters would have been like if the CGI we have noe existed then? It's made most film makers lazy. Only the truly innovative use it wisely but their films regularly don't get made or just don't have mass appeal. Bar Michael Bay and Speilberg.

Oliver Stone, David Lynch, Tim Burton and a few others still churn out the quality, but it's low(er) budget quality without a full studio-backed release unlike the turgid crap we're fed all the time.
 
I still can't believe Hot Fuzz is considred to be one of the 250 best films ever. That's something I never thought I'd hear. Anyway, IMDB is over-run with sad American 14 year olRAB who either have to ask "Is he gay" on the forum or slag off some film they have never seen because they have nothing better to do. I wouldn't take their rating seriously or their Top 250 list either, but I still find it surprising that that film made it into the Top 250.
