It Makes Me Mad When....

In a cartoon or comic-book story when the male character's are talking about how the girls are weaker and can not do as much then the girl does the same thing and makes the boys look foolish...

I've never figured out why writers who are male write a story like this because it makes thier gender look foolish and stupid...

How old are you? I'm guessing about 10.

Anyway, when cartoons do that they're trying to puncture gender stereotypes and the chauvinism of the young boys who watch them. It does get tired after a while, but it shouldn't make anyone angry.

Judging by the initial post, I'm guessing the OP must be a male. ;)

But, yeah, the bit is supposed to tear down the stereotype of females being the so-called "weaker sex". It's supposed to be empowering to women and blowing the air out of male chauvinism.

My only complaint about the gag is that it's been overdone, and by now it should be common knowledge that women are capable beings. It's kind of cliche now, but I'm not angered by it.

Since when are they obligated to make their male characters represent every single male being on the planet in the best and most perfect way possible? They're characters to be viewed and judged in their individual terms, not as microcosms of an entire gender. And the same goes for female characters... actually, it's far more relevant for females (and that's all I'll say on that matter).

I agree though that I can't stand the "battle of the sexes" mentality neither in real-life or in cartoons (unless the rivalry is playful and without any malicious intent from either side).

The gag I see a lot of is when a guy is trying to open a jar. He's unable to do it and then his girlfriend comes over and without any effort opens up the jar. And the guy's excuse is that he was only loosening it.

I think it's understandible to get a little bit of anger though. I mean a good writer shouldn't have to dumb down one side (whether it's based on gender, race and age) to make the other look good.

The Justice League episode Fury for instance was able to be pro women and still acknowledge that there are decent men out there.

Funny.

I think this sort of humor (especially the more obvious gags like Drakken/Shego and the jar opening saga) are preposterous and stupid, and don't reflect normalcy worthily. They show a distinct bias towards women being superior to men. Neither gender is superior and women shouldn't go about thinking they're better than us just because they can open a jar lid. Now sure i find opening jar lids difficult and i'm sure women don't but that's probably because women have... warmer hands or something. Anyway the point is that this sort of humour is dumb, stupid, and a tad droll.

I find it to be a tad overdone, but you must also consider the fact that the majority of TV shows and movies are written and produced by men, so it can't really be thought of as demeaning to one gender.

Anyway, if you don't want to see any kind of male bashing, then you'd pretty much have to stop watching TV and movies altogether.

Already done!

Eeeeh, not really. I can think of quite a few things that don't resort to the tired old cliche where "random girl is smart or witty or prudent, random guy is foolish or brash or impulsive." I still remember an episode of Ben 10 Alien force where you had a female antagonist alien and a male antagonist alien, and they followed the code as if the writers were treating it like a religion.

Whenever anyone decides to assign entire personality traits to only one sex, it's over. It's stereotyping, it isn't true to life, and worst of all it becomes boring and predictable. Which is "worst of all" because that's the worst place for a story to be.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I don't get what you guys think is so stereotypical here. Read what he's specifically complaining about in the OP. This kind of thing is overdone but it's anti-stereotype. It starts with boys assuming "The woman is the weaker sex" and then ends with them being proven wrong. The OP is just annoyed because the cartoons aren't conforming to his own immature chauvinist worldview, don't validate that for him.

I get a little mad when some of the characters yell their dialog.
I get really mad when all of the characters yell their dialog all the time.

Also, whats with these dumb or overprotective parents? Where's the balance? Where's the "Mr. Incredible" dad types? Not the power, but the attitude.
