I'm recommending to my elderly parents that they drop their $40/month Verizon postpaid plan and go with Virgin Mobile. My parents need something for an emergency, but have only used their current phone once in several years.

With Virgin Mobile, I believe one plan is called Minute2Minute, where the minutes cost the most, but is the cheapest plan for minimal usage. The minimum cost is adding $20 to your airtime account every 90 days, and they have an AutoPay system where it can automatically charge your credit card. The minutes build up to $200 worth if not used; the account won't store more than that.

A friend of mine has this plan and says it was easy to setup through Virgin's 1-800 number. This way, my parents won't have to worry about adding minutes on their own; it's all automatic. They can pop the phone in the glove box along with a travel charger, and they're good to go.

My friend has an Audiovox flip phone that he seems to like. I'm recommending to my parents that they get the Nokia Shorty, which is still available at Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint network, so you should check to be sure your mom's area has coverage.
