how come they get free gas and we have to pay almost $4 a gallon for it?

isn't it ridiculous to use gas purely for entertainment when oil prices are so high people could use that gas for things that are actually necessary?
"As far as the actual events are concerned, NASCAR officials say its teams are not affected by the day-to-day fluctuations in fuel cost. Why? The gas Sunoco gives them is free, covered under a multiyear contract that ensures they will have fuel at each track. Essentially, fuel is provided cost-free from Sunoco to the teams as part of its exclusivity agreement with NASCAR."

how much gas is being wasted by all the spectators DRIVING to these events (often from far away), often in RVs, trucks etc.
"The trees that are felled every year to satisfy Major League Baseball's appetite for lumber –- the equivalent of about 100,000 bats -- all come from a single narrow zone spanning the the Pennsylvania-New York border, which by virtue of its climate, terrain and soil is the ideal place for hardwoods to grow. Go too far north and the timber is too dense for a good bat. Go too far south and it's too soft.

No wonder then that the hardwood forests in this geographic sweet spot are managed with sustainability uppermost in mind. To say they are nurtured with a care usually reserved for hothouse flowers is to exaggerate only slightly. "

It's sad that some small businesses have a hard time surviving because of high fuel prices yet people waste it on auto racing (and they get FREE gas, racing fuel or not) and going to auto races. You don't think it is a bit wasteful?
Gas is only $2.00 in Texas? GEE what a surprise!
I use recycled paper products.
