Is Xbox Live worth purchasing? PLZ READ?

I favour games like Mass Effect and Bioshock, in other words, excellently designed adventure games with absorbing stories. Plus, I can get REALLY frustrated when I feel I've been cheated in multiplayer games ¬_¬ Not to mention my laptop won't connect to my console properly, and therefore I'll need to buy a wireless adapter... So taking that into account, is Xbox Live worth purchasing?

P.S. side question, is Xbox Live necessary to download extra content for games?
