Is Winston's life better at the start or at the end of 1984 and why?

I have an essay due for English tomorrow and am kind of undecided on what side to pick so, I was looking for help. If I say his life is better at the start I could say that because, of him getting caught by the police at the end. ALso because, his biggest fears are pain and dying he is now in the hands of the government in terms of when he will die. He is also brainwashed at the end which is negative and accepts/loves big brother which is something he was totally against at the start. As for the other side if I were to write about that the only thing Is that because, he was so scared of being caught and getting killed by the government that when he is caught at the end he will finally be able to relax a bit since he knows the end is near. If someone could provide me with a side they feel that I have that is better to argue I would apreciatte it and will pick best answer. I also need reasons and if someone can provide me with some quotes since I have no access to my book because, I left it in school by accident. It would be helpful if someone could guide me. Thanks.
