Is what I did a cruel way to discipline a kid?

Yesterday, my brother asked me to babysit my 4 year old niece and she started acting up. I asked her to pick up her toys, and she said "no." I told if she didn't do as she was asked, she was going in time-out. Her response was to turn around and hit my leg, so I put her in a timeout chair. She got out of the chair and ran off laughing. I wasn't gonna chase her around. I know she's terrified of being alone in the dark, so I took her and locked her in a dark room by herself for 4 minutes (a minute for each year). She started bawling and screaming, and I just ignored her. WShe wasn't coming out until her 4 minutes were done. However, my dad stepped in and let her out before her punishment was over and told me that what I did was cruel. I thought the punishment was fine since it didn't jeopardize her safety and kept her from acting up any further that day.

Do you think what I did was wrong?

On a side note, I don't believe in spanking or corporal punishment.
