Is VLC Media Player region free?

I recently bought some Region 1 DVD's and I'm pretty sure they will work on my DVD player (I live in Australia which is Region 4). But if for some reason they don't work will I be able to use VLC Media Player to play them.

VLC media player is an opened source software which means you are completely free to use it free of charge

No, computer DVD drives also have a region lock. the region lock is independent of software, doesn't matter whether you use VLC or Windows Media Player.

You can, however, change the DVD drive region to and fro about 4 times

# Select Properties and go to the Hardware tab
# Find your DVD drive in this list again and click the Properties button
# Go to the DVD Region tab
# Now in the list of regions find the place where your DVD arrives from, select it and click OK

You are limited to 4 changes -- after that, the DVD drive is permanently locked to the region.
