Is this weird? Or normal?

My Boxer is 8 years old. For the past year his nails have been growing so fast! When he was younger his nails barely ever grew, i'd clip them about once a month, because they would never grow long enough to cut. Now I'm clipping his nails about once a week because they get so long very fast. I know you should cut your dogs nails at least every two weeks. Do dogs nails grow faster as they become older?
 
I'm of the old school of thought that the more you clip dog's nails, the faster they grow.We always had dogs when I was young and never clipped their nails, as we always took them on plenty of pavement walks as well as grassy places and that kept them right.
