is this really illegal at buffets?

we were at a chinese buffet today and after we were done i took a couple small pieces of meat off my plate to give to my noble hound who was waiting in the van. i folded them in a napkin and a guy sitting with me told me it was illegal and they call the cops on people for that. i could see if i was filling up a tag along bowl and sticking it in my purse but a couple pieces of meat that were going to go into the garbage? if they caught me and i explained it was for my little princess do you think they'd let me go? i didn't see any warning signs on the door, and they let my son walk out with his ice cream cone.
WOW, you have no idea how scared i was! we went to kmart afterwards and i kept looking behind us for cops!!!! what a little a hole. i will get him back.
