Is this poetry, or do some know more about it than this?

Glass Shards

Poet sat upon the sunrise day
and pondered so mightily
at mosaic glassy shards
to illuminate in newness light.
And the hamper filled with
blackened, crumpled filings
while sun noon passed through,
but the Poet saw none of this
as the world he travelled
was mind to pen.
And in this world he cared not
for illusions of praise for
mediocrity, for his was the grail
search for the perfect line, the
perfect verse, the perfect pen.
For when these shards do
painstakingly fit at last,
a mosaic rich in untold hues
await the viewer’s eye to feast.

I don't know about all that...

I started sharing what I wrote and someone said it was poetry...

Poetry has no definite definition--it's all around you if you will see

1. An art form vital to preliterate society to convey knowledge and culture, which continued to deeply affect societies right up until the twentieth century, where the advent of recorded music made it obsolete as a means of conveying entertainment and culture.

2. A residue of the deep affection with which poetry was held until a century ago is the pernicious cliche of the "poet" a person of deep emotion and profoundly misunderstood by society -- in their minds, who writes heartfelt verse for the mythical "audience of like minds" that supposedly exists out there. The really sad part is the more trite work that is passed around the worse the ratio becomes between those who write and those who READ. Right now it stands at about 20 "poets" for 1 reader. "Poets" are killing poetry faster than any other cause.

3. Academia retains a vestigial "poetry society" which is about feeling superior and knowing a lot of devices, techniques and tropes. It is actually a branch of anthropology but thinks it is part of the English curriculum. This is the only form of poetry which actually has a relationship to the publishing world, although to keep it's anthropological aims alive it runs poetry journals which nobody reads that publish gratis aspiring poets from the amateur category, so that they can praise the "noble savage" and feel superior to everyone else.

4. The use of poetry in doggerel, song and ribald humor continues unabated. Oddly, places like Yahoo poetry light up like Lazarus when they break out the parodies and toilet humor. Without our humanity, all of this would be cyber-farts. (Yahoo says I mean subverts, LOL)

5. There are some who eek out a modicum of self-respect by being judgmental and critical of others, who trash everything and go to superhuman lengths to stress their superiority. It is a classic game of "King of the Dung Hill."

"Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven." - John Milton's Satan

1. A verbal composition designed to convey experiences, ideas, or emotions in a vivid and imaginative way, characterized by the use of language chosen for its sound and suggestive power and by the use of literary techniques such as meter, metaphor, and rhyme.
2. A composition in verse rather than in prose.
3. A literary composition written with an intensity or beauty of language more characteristic of poetry than of prose.
4. A creation, object, or experience having beauty suggestive of poetry.
