is this photo fake?

i m not sure whether this can be real or fake.i m figuring why would this soldier aim at woman with a child in her arms from such a close distance.?
as I know this is done with a pistol no?and prior to shooting child would be separated from mum.

This phot is quite well known and is believed to have been taken in Ukraine in the early days of Hitler´s invasion of it (it was then part of the USSR). It is not a fake, documenting a mass execution of civilians, probably in reprisal for resistance force activity.
