Is this bogus or am I whining?
I work for a security company and there is one other guy who works with me on the contract, who I have seniority over. He works 2 days a week so that I can have a weekend and then works 3 days elsewhere.
The property we secure is changing hands, from state to a county level. This is causing two main issues. 1.) We were recently told that the contract is changing from only 8hrs a day to 24/7, around the clock. 2.) It's not known how much longer the contract will last; even though it’s still government property, it’s still different.
The company doesn't want to hire more personnel as they may be letting them go IF the contract falls through. So they're going to shift the other guy over, have supervisors fill in and have mandatory overtime.
I welcome the overtime; they’re planning on having us work 4 – 12hr days. I’ll get an extra 1½ days pay every week and a 3-day weekend.
Here’s my gripe. I live, literally 5min from work, the other guy about 45min to an hour, depending on weather. Our supervisor is going to leave me on grave-shift because when I get off work at 8:00am, after working for 12hrs, it takes me 5min to get home. The other guy is afraid of falling asleep on the road home, so he get’s to work days with less seniority. Here’s the kicker; there’s no differential pay for working graves.
So is this a viable complaint or should I just take one for the team?
I know there’s no ‘I’ in ‘TEAM’. There’s no ‘WE’, either.
