To the editor,
My name is Kellie _____ and I would like to bring to your attention the recent global issue concerning climate change. I am very strongly concerned and feel that this issue needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
Climate change is the temperature rise that Earth has experienced during the past 100 years. Some scientists believe that this temperature rise is occurring naturally, but there is much conflict over whether humans are to blame, or if the earth is getting hotter by itself.
Most scientists agree that climate changed is a result of the greenhouse effect. This is when solar radiation from the sun warms our earth, although instead of the heat escaping back into space, greenhouse gases such as water vapor, methane, and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere trap the heat causing a rise in temperature.
Some of these greenhouse gases occur naturally and cannot be prevented although human activities such as Industrialization, deforestation, and pollution have greatly increased the amounts of carbon emissions in our atmosphere. In this way, humans are to blame for climate change.
Most people aren’t concerned about climate change as they cannot see the effects of it. There are many smaller consequences of climate change such as; dying coral reefs, spread of disease, warmer waters, more hurricanes, increased probability of droughts/ heat waves, etc… but by far the most concerning is the rise of sea levels.
As a result of the temperature rise, ice caps and glaciers out at sea have begun to melt, this has put more fresh water in the ocean; throwing off the salt balance and currents, but most importantly causing sea level to rise around the coasts and flooding coastlines, this means islands in low-lying areas such as Fiji, Vanuatu, etc… are actually losing land area off their circumference.
This may be quite a slow process but if it continues in hundreds to thousands of years time, we could have small islands such as Tuvalu nonexistent as sea levels will have risen to such a high point. People sit and say they are not concerned about climate change? They don’t realize we are slowly destroying our earth.
I believe that the people of this world that say “I cannot do anything about climate change, one person won’t make a difference” are plain selfish and making excuses. Sure, one person alone may not make a huge difference, but one person may inspire another, if we all pitch in together we will be at least reducing the carbon emissions we produce, and hopefully, we will be able to preserve this world for many future generations to come.
