CHAPTER 1
Shadow Riders

Breezy air slipped through the cracks in the walls of the old Harcourt fortress. The damp stones, or what was left of them, were covered in moss. Of course, it had not always been that way. Centuries ago, in the time of good fortune and prosperity, it was the most magnificent fortress in all of Royden. But all of that was changed during the reign of the Moon Lords.
They brought war and chaos to the entire world of Tervell. But that time was over now, ended by a horrible revolution, and regular royalty was restored to the throne. The Moon Lords were killed, but death was not enough. They lived on, staying hidden from the rest of the world. Of course, no evil is ever truly destroyed; kept alive by sometimes no more than a single thread of life. And of course, all evil has that which opposes it—that which is set out to destroy it, and which it is set out to destroy. And, in the case of the Moon Lords, that opponent was the Sun Mistresses.
The sound of hooves echoed through the abandoned fortress, gathering in a vast, drafty, courtyard in the middle of the stone building. Once they were settled, the cloaked figures climbed off their horses and onto the misty cobblestone. Glowing white eyes and translucent white fingers were all that stood out on their shadowy figures in the darkness.
One figure stood in front of the rest, still mounted on its jet-black horse. “We have one last chance for complete power,” he began, his voice a raspy whisper. “We have the descendant of Shadow Knight himself, heir to the throne…should we not succeed. And also, we have the last of the Sun Mistresses to destroy. Nothing shall keep us from returning to power,” he completed. Whispers and muttering rose up among the rest of the Shadow Riders.
One came forward to the deep black horse and whispered to it carefully. “Grandfather,” he called it, but did not have time to finish. The horse whinnied.
“Back, Ruslan,” said the man who appeared to be the leader. Ruslan backed carefully away to his own horse; his glowing eyes squinted with guilt.
“In two days, we must be in Zereldan, capitol city of Kinnell, for that is where both of our targets reside. Find the heir, he is still human…wears the ring of power. But do not kill him, for if he dies, we shall never rule again. If the wearer of the ring dies, so will the Moon—our only power,” said the man. There was a vague chorus of agreement before he continued. “And the Sun Mistress…her necklace is an amber circle, set in a gold star. She—the last—holds all of the Sun Mistress’ power. If you see her, you kill her. Do not hold back. We will know immediately if she is powerless, for the sun shall shine no longer.”
If they had been visible, all of the faces surely would have been smiling with sinister delight. The thing the Moon Lords craved most; more than anything in the world, was power. “I am afraid we must hurry along. I have many fears we are being watched by the current royalty. We cannot face them now. Not until we bring Shadow Knight to human form. He is the only one of us that can rule, other than his heir. He is our last life. Protect him!”

And yes, I know how to indent, but Y! answers doesn't allow that.
