Is this a weird thing to say?

i go fishing at my father-in-law's house every few weekends. i don't bother them or even go in the house to use the bathroom (they have one outdoors). he usually comes down to the dock and says hello if he is home.

today, he came down and after some small talk says "i have to ask you not to come next weekend because my wife's family will be in town." i just blew it off, said ok, and we talked about fish or whatever.

the wife is not my husband's mother. she is pretty nice. father-in-law has had problems with his original family. actually avoids them all but my husband. he has asked my husband not to come over when her family is there many times.

i just think it's weird and rude. if he had said that company was coming, i probably wouldn't have come anyway.

what do you think?
i guess it's more that i think it's hurtful to my husband.
i don't think he's trying to mean or anything, but i just don't get it. if we all get along, why would we not then. kinda makes me feel like we are hidden in the closet. not that i want to hang out with them anyway. don't worry, i won't be talking to him about it!
when i say "many times" it is really anytime her family is there we are not to come around
