The prompt is: Discuss the symbolic meaning of the birthmark in "The Birthmark"
It's for my honors American Literature class.
To some, a birthmark is a mark of beauty that makes one unique, but to others it may be seen as a defect or imperfection. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Birthmark” Georgiana’s birthmark is perceived in both these ways by the various characters within the story. Georgiana’s birthmark is a mark of transience symbolizing the reality that all living beings will ultimately meet mortality.
