...the civil war? The year 1860, the month november, at this time only 33 states made up America. Abraham Lincoln has been elected president. Lincoln was voted in by the north, he had no southern support. He had no idea of the events that fallow his election. But, to better understand the events and documents leading up to 1861,the Civil War, lets go back to the 1850's.
July 5th,1852, an escaped slave stood in Rochester,New York in front of an audience made up entirely of white northerns. His name, Fredrick Douglass,34 at the time, he became a famous aferican-american abolitionist, for his speech " The meaning of july fourth for the negro". The meaning of this speech was to show how slaves felt that americans where hypacrits.They celabrate freedom, independance and equail rights, but this only applys for whites. Blacks don't get treated like we saw everyone should. Five years later the social issues where still on the rise.1857,Gorge Fitzhugh a sociolgist from North Carolina wrote a book called,Cannibals All! or slaves without masters.The meaning for this book was to show from his point of view the slaves could not be happier. He felt that the slaves where the freest people and the woman where protected from thier abousive husbands by their masters. The same year the Dread Scott Decision took place.A slave,Dead Scott, desides to sue his owner. The outcome was not good for Dread and his wife, beacause the negros where property in the south and the selling of slaves was banded in the north, the ownership of them was not. There for the 5th amendment was not in place and Dread Scott lost his case. In 1859 one of the last most inprotain social issues took place.James Brown lead a faild atempt to seize the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry to start slave up rising. After a failed atempt Brown was hanged for treasen.
While social issues where rising political issuse was taking its turn making headlines. The Kanasas-Nebrasas act was pasted in 1854. Witch stated that Kansas and Nebraska would vote on weather to be slave states or free states. When people got word the north and south both sent people to live there.Viloince brokeout in Kanasas and soon got the nickname bleeding Kanass. Two years later on May 19th,1856 senator Chanes Summer, an abolitionist, deliverd a speech that attacked pro-slavery men and insulted South Carolina and the well liked Andrew Butler.Two days later Prestion Brooks takes matters into his own hands and beat sumner with a cane. This shows that vilionce was not only in the states between pro-slavery and anti-slavery supporters, but it was also in the government.Abraham Licoln gave a speech in Illinois on July 16th,1858. While giving this speech he used the famous words, " A house divied aginst itself cannot stand". Meaning when he says house he is refuring to the house of repsentives. During this speech he talks about how if slavery is not going to come to a complete stop then we should stop it from spreading.When time came for the election of 1860 the divison between the states really showed its true colors. Lincoln ran aganist three other men, J.C. Breckenridge,Stephen A. Douglas and John Bell. Lincoln won all the northern votes, showing how the south really felt about the soon the be president.

In 1857 the south desided that all of the utility and adorment came from the noth and it needed to stop, they wanted to support them selves better. In 1860 the north was leading in the railroad indestery,with more then 21,000 miles. The south was leading in slavery and cotton production. The north was not onley leading in railroad miles, they where leading in population,industrial workers,manufactured goods and corn.
