Artemis Fowl The Opal Deception
The story is about “the underworld” of fairies and other mythological creatures battle against the surface world, which is the human race. The protagonist, Artemis Fowl a 14 year old Irish mastermind being the only human with knowledge of their existence until the last book when he had his memory wiped. The book starts off with the introduction of Opal Koboi who is described as an evil genius. She escapes a high security prison and sets her plan of world domination into action. She kills Julius Root (who is the police chief of the underworld) and frames the antagonist Holly Short who is the first female police or “LEPrecon” officer for the murder. Artemis Fowl is busy trying to steal a very important piece of art from the underworld called the “Fairy Thief” while the disturbance in the underworld is going on. Opal Koboi uses this to her advantage and locates him. She attempts to take him out by kidnapping both Artemis and Holly, leaving them to die in an abandoned theme park, so he does not have a chance to plot against her if the police force asks him for help.
Holly and Artemis both escape and Foaly (a paranoid centaur genius working for the LEPrecon force) discovers Opal’s new plan to expose the existence of fairies to the surface world. She intends to destroy the underworld with liquid iron with the aid of a hypnotized Italian environmentalist, Giovanni Zito. Only Holly and few other members of the force know of her plan. Eventually, Artemis regains his memory using a computer disk he had programmed to return his knowledge lost from the memory wipe.
Artemis, Holly, and a criminal she has befriended named Mulch Diggums stops her plan by destroying her ship sending her tumbling down the dangerous tunnels of their city. The framed Holly Short is then acquitted for the crime of murdering her commanding officer Julius Root by the fairy “supreme court”. She then opens her own private investigative business with the help of Mulch Diggums who was pardoned for helping save the fairy race. Opal flees the tunnels after her ship is destroyed and lands on a winery, shortly after she is arrested and sent back to jail. Artemis said he had gained much from the whole ordeal and plans to use his new knowledge for other operations in the future.
Overall, the novel was different. I am not a fan of sci-fi but the Artemis fowl series is my all time favorite books to read. Very unpredictable yet has a static quality to it and usually has a happy ending which is some times needed looking at the events happening in the world today. Although it may sound like a book for younger children the vocabulary used sent me running for a dictionary multiple times. The book is very detailed and I can always picture what is happening as I read, It also really draws you into the story making you feel as if you are there watching the whole thing unfold.
This is really half assed. Its 2:00 am. and i want to sleep so I kinda threw this together as the redbull wore up.
