Is there some kind of stigma attached to the Australian Ford Falcon?

I'm a college professor in design, and not originally from downunder, but live there; and I just fulfilled myself the juvenile fantasy of buying an Australian high performance Ford Falcon XR6.
My students went "ewwhh!!" and "You bought WHAT??!"
Should I have bought a Volvo instead, maybe, like any good little professor would?
What's the story with that Falcon, what sort of image does that have? I always used to think of it as just an innocuous big thing people drive around the back country with horse trailers, kind of a quaint and romantic, homy sort of thing.
