Is there I law saying that custody defaults to the mother in case of divorce?

Where can I access actual laws pertaining to custody and parents rights? If there is no law shouldnt the majority of divorces end with 50/50?
It appears to me that mothers usually get custody of the children, and men spend thousands of dollars fighting for them. I do not think this is fair.
