Is there anyway to play iTunes music on other brand players or phones?

I had a 2nd generation Ipod Nano that broke (left it in the car too much and the heat got to it) and I don't have the money to replace it. A lot of my songs, the favorites anyway, were from the iTunes store and cause of that I can't play them on my phone cause of that stupid protection thing. Is there anyway around it? It's stupid Apple forces us to use songs we purchased only on their devices...
Makes me want to just buy from Rhapsody from now on to avoid the lame protect crap. We should be able to listen to it with whatever device after we purchase it -_-
