I keep reading how a lot of people have had "failed fusions, failed surgeries" in gerneral and it scares me to no end.
I am only 26, female, no kiRAB (yet).
I would love to have a family one day. I am facing surgery very soon.
Are there any "good" stories out there. Please share, it can be yours or someone you know. Encourage me that there is a chance of it helping even the slightest.

I am currently going to college so I am going to see if I can get the surgery over Christmas break.
For those who have had surgery, how long were you in the hospital? How long were you laid up that you actually couldn't even touch the computer or too drugged up to be able to think. (school wise)
I'm planning on getting the surgery and possibly taking online class's to stay in school next semester.
I get my MRI Tuesday the 31st and only go back Sept 23rd to find out what is going on for sure.

Again any nice/good stories are welcome but you can share whatever story you have.

Thank you!

what type of surgery is being proposed? and is this surgery going to help resolve pain or just correct some kind of instability. too many people have back surgey because of pain, but what they dont know is most of the time the surgery isnt going to help the pain but correct a instability,etc. so many people in pain and think thier pain is unbearable and take narcotic pain meRAB to help control the pain and function better; have stated that after thier surgery they have discovered a "new" level of unbearable pain and wished they had never agreed to the surgery. so, becareful, get 2nd and evan 3rd opinions, and determine what really is your goal you seek to achieve with surgery;
have you really exhausted all other avenues of treatment?

good luck

p.s. there is a poster who calls himself "Shoreline", he usually post on the pain management board; search for his posts as he has invaluable info on back surgeries or go to the pain management board and ask him a question, i dont think you can ask by name but if you start a thread about "back surgery, would you do it?" you will probably get his attention-there is also another knowledgable poster who calls herself"SpineAZ", hopefully she will come along and help you with good advice too

Hospital time, recovery, bracing, PT, etc are all based on the type of surgery, amount of levels if a fusion, approach (from the back, from the abdomen, both, etc). When I was young (27) I was able to return to work about 6 weeks following my L4-S1 spine fusion. I was in a hard brace for about 4 months.

I have unique loose ligaments and tendons which has led to further surgeries but each has been a success in it's own way.

Hi Mayo26,
I've had the same question. It does seem like surgery only caused more probs for allot of people.
I go in to a Specialist Tuesday. Been going to a Chiropracter for 4 months, no improvement. I have a Degenerative disk. Only had x-rays.
My husband acts like it's more of an inconvenience for him since I can't do the things I used to... Which have contributed to my back getting worst... His Step dad (on disability) & Step Brother have both had surgeries. He figures they are fine & assumes that if I can have surgery I'll be as good as new...
btw, we have a farm, I do what I can. I just can't clean stalls & build aviaries like I used to... That's what he has a hard time with... But I still manage to clean cages, take care of the animals, ect. It's hard though...

There is I had a fusion 3 weeks ago and I'm running (not really running)around with the kiRAB and back to work. I walk more than 3 miles a day. Don't get spooked. Have a good attitude and things will be fine.

I had two levels done. The pain goes up and down. I may take a perc 5mg/375 a day. I have a lot of strength to gain so I have very sore muscles each day. Here is what I am going by, My bad days now are not even my good days then. Going to my kiRAB ball games/daughters soccer games. Went to work for 3 days last week. Gonna go a couple more this week. If you have a choice to not have don't have it. When you can't even stand anymore and your life is greatly affected. Then you do it. And find the best doctor you can.

4 months in this thing. Uggggh. Oh Well nothing I can do. The most uncomfortable thing on this earth.

That's awesome! I hope it continues to go well for you! How is your pain?
Thank You for sharing :) Its nice to see a good outcome

Thank You for the info! You were very helpful :) I can only imagine how uncomfortable it is... I do hope you feel better soon!

Thank you, and everyone that replied. I am not sure at this point but it was brought up breifly basically, when I get my MRI Tuesday and get the results at the end of Sept, that will determine surgery or not.

As someone said about not doing surgery unless it completely affects your life and can move. This happens on more then one occasions where I can not get out of bed. I sleep one position all night, I can barely handle siting on the toilt to go.. I can barely dress myself, and I cut 14 inches of hair off my head because it got wait too much for me to handle. I could barely wash it. I had help for the first year this all happened and started, but that was from my now EX and well when that all happened, I had no more help. So I had to do this stuff on my own and it just got worse overtime and I just couldn't handle it anymore. So I did away with what I could. Maybe it was the easy way out? I am sure it was. I thought I was a wuss when it came to pain but some days it just surprises me how much pain I am in then to know there is a day every soo often (too often lately) that I get even more pain. I just can't bare it. I simply can't handle being a woman if you ladies know what I mean. It gets really bad (pain wise) but I do it because I have to.

I just don't know what to do anymore. Try more meRAB? I really have not been perscribed all the medications I could have been. With being delayed doctor visits due to uninsured. I don't know.

thank you agian for every response. And I will come back to reply for the up date or make a new thread when I find out more about my MRI.

I am 24 and when I was 22 I had a spinal fusion from S1-L4 with 2 roRAB and 4 screws. It was a complete success! I feel sooooooo much better. I have spondylolisthesis with a pars defect. So I was unstable but suffering from pain too. The kind of pain I was in before was just so hard to get through. I mean wanted to kill myself bad. I was taking the maximum amount of Ultram I could and it didn't even touch my pain. I was in the hospital 6 days the norm is 3-4 I had some really bad pain in the right hip after surgery due to they think was that protein they used but it got better each day. I had no pain anymore except my graft site sometimes hurts a little, nothing at all compared to before and it might last a day at the most. Everyone I met either told me to do it or not to do it. The question is do you want to do it. I said that if there was even the slightest chance that it would help even a little then it was totally worth it. I'm thankful everyday that I did.
