touch the ground at the same time? We recently bought a slightly used girl's bicycle with learning wheels at a garage sale - it's the bigger type of bicycle, made for 4-8 year old girls (sorry I don't know much about children's bikes besides the basics). Our almost-four year old daughter, who is tall for her age, loves it to pieces and wants to ride it every day. However we found that we cannot get both little training wheels in the back to touch the ground at the same time, when we try we cannot tighten them; so that one of the training wheels is always slightly off the ground (and we were told that this is how they are supposed to be!).
The problem with this is that she hasn't even figured out how to pedal the bicycle yet (she was never interested in learning to ride a bike until now). But due to the uneven training wheels, she wobbles on it a lot and keeps falling over, and basically one of us has to be right next to her catching her all the time. This is really hard on our backs, and to me honestly this defies the purpose of learning to ride on your own! We would like her to learn how to pedal the bike first, before she worries about keeping her balance, and were wondering if there is any way to adjust this bicycle and bring down both training wheels so that they touch the ground at the same time, so that they create a 'tricycle' effect, without having to buy her a trycicle too? I know tricycles are more stable but most of them are too small for her by now and we are trying to make do with one bike, instead of two?. Do you know of any way we can adjust the training wheels on this bike to make it easier for her to learn to ride? Thank you for any sugestions.

Keep at it, and eventually she won't need them. The key, believe it or not, is speed. She just has to be going fast enough to hold the wheel straight. Tell her to stop looking at the ground or at you, and to look straight ahead while she pedals.

The only thing for this is practice, so you just have to suck it up, Mom and Dad. You can do it. If anything, this is probably doing you some good. Do you two have your own bikes so you can all take rides together? That will also help with your backs.

:D
