I am a college junior and am currently in the application process of enlisting in the USCG Reserves. Well not literally yet but I am talking to a couple of Lieutenants at my school about the CG. I am extremely interested in enlisting, but have a few questions to ask. Since I am enrolled at NY Merchant Marine Academy as a junior with 104 college credits (Most of the classes are STCW USCG mandatory classes needed for a 3rd Mate's License) do I get any push over anyone that are coming straight out of high school? Instead of becoming an airman, fireman, seaman apprentice would I move onto maybe E-3? The whole problem is I was originally going out to sea for 3 months on the training ship as my last cruise at the school. Currently I have 210 days at sea under a Licensed Merchant Marine officer, would that help at all? Instead of going out to sea this spring/summer I would go to boot camp (if there are any dates during that time) this May/June. What are the chances I would be able to get into this Spring/Summer ship dates to Boot Camp? My ASVAB score is a 92, I am sure that will help out with picking a job. The reason I want to go enlisted before I go officer is because I really want to be a prior enlisted member of the CG before I apply for OCS 3 or 4 years after graduating from here. Does that sound smart or dumb? Any information would be greatly appreciated!!
