Is there a word or phrase that describes the representation of something as an explanation of some phenomenon? For example, in Greek mythology echoes are thought to come from the voice of Echo the nymph. Also in the Matrix, some of the "programs" seem to represent the existence of spirits. Is there a word for this? I keep on thinking simile, but that's not quite right...
