Is there a way to stop people from seeing you're online in the Facebook chat thing?

I hate signing into Facebook when all I want to do is look through pictures, and people keep talking to me in the chat. Don't get me wrong, I love all my friends, but it just gets a little annoying. Is there a way to temporarily turn off the chat feature, so that no one can see I'm online?

click the icon and cut it off.

Click the chat icon, choose go offline. You will stay signed until you want to be seen.
