Is there a way to permanently store iTunes-formatted movies on my Apple TV without

"syncing"? I converted some clips that I had on my hard drive into the proper iTunes format so that the default software (rather than the hacks I have installed) on my Apple TV will read/play them. This works, however, the problem I have with it is this:

The files seem to have to remain on the hard drive, in the location from which they were first sync'ed, in order to remain on the Apple TV's internal hard drive. Which sucks, really; I had been hoping to straight-up transfer the files to the Apple TV, somehow, and then just delete them from my laptop's or external hard drive, in order to free up some space. But, it appears as though I have no alternative but to keep the original file on my computer.
Or do I?

My hope, in the end, is to be able to play the iTunes-formatted files that I have sync'ed/am sync'ing to my Apple TV, directly from the Apple TV, without the Apple TV deleting those files when it realizes that the original files are no longer on the computer hard drive from which they came. Make sense?
