I'm 20 and a student in college. I do not live with my parents, nor do my parents help in any way for any of my bills. I have a job, I pay my phone bill, my rent, my gym membership. I manage my finances, staying away from credit cards (I see no point in spending what I don't have). I am 100% independent from them, but not in the eyes of the government.
According to the federal government, I still have to consider myself a dependent for financial aid purposes, meaning I have to use my mom's tax information for FAFSA information. I cannot afford to go off my mom's information due to the fact that, with her, I ONLY qualify for Loans! After 2 and a half years in school, if you include interest, I already owe over 60 or 70 thousand dollars in student loans!! I still have a few years left and cannot afford to just keep taking loan after loan after loan out.
Is there a way that I could get the federal government to see me as an independent person financially instead of still seeing me as a child dependent on "mommy" for money? From what I have been told, I either have to pop out kids, get married, or cut 100% of my ties with my mom and dad. There is no way in hell I'm going to do that.
I currently have my boyfriend's dad, he's a lawyer, looking into this, but he doesn't know when he will be able to come across any information for this, since he owns his own firm and works a lot doing his actual work.
Any information at all will be great! I just think it's pathetic how badly the federal government is screwing over the students in this country!
