Is there a species of lizard that can be kept outdoors as a pet?

I live in southern California. I don't want to keep it in a cage... I have a Koi pond/waterfall area and I was wondering if it would be possible to 'bond' a lizard to that area. There are lots of rocks and bugs and interesting things to play with. Would it just run away, or is there some kind of lazy lizard that wants to sit on my rocks? It also should be able to fight cats, if it wants to live for very long...

It's possible to tame some of the wild lizards by offering them attractive food and gradually approaching them, but think that by learning to trust, they'll become more vulnerable to predators, you don't want to get attached to a lizard only to see it eaten by the neighbour's dog!
