Is there a reason why potting soil should not be used in a garden?

I was purchasing a few bags of top soil and a bag of potting soil. One sales person asked if I was going to put it in my garden, then went off on me when I said yes- though she did not explain why, she kept saying, "it says so on the bag!"

Potting soil is much finer than garden soil. It isn't bad for your plants but will wash away when watering.
If you want to use it in the garden mix in some mulch to give it texture & structure
As far as sales people are concerned, when I visit the plant nursery I always talk to a horticulturist

I've never heard that, actually, have heard the opposite. Strange. lol

I usually add a little potting soil to my regular soil, and blend. For extra nutrients.

But that's really different - never heard that before.

I was told the same thing for around new bushes and trees. The lady at the nursery told me that the plants can get "spoiled" with the nutrient rich potting soil, and will not be as likely to branch out into the existing soil around the plant, and ultimately when the nutrients in the potting soil is all used up, the plant can't survive.
