Is there a reason for this horrible statistic of death by guns?

Killed By Guns Each Year:
Germany- 381
France- 255
Canada- 165
UK- 68
Australia- 65
Japan- 39
USA- 11,127

Why?
The source is a 2007 World Almanac

Oh wow, Germany is that high?

Well, to answer your question, it's because we have guns. Plain and simple. Guns themselves don't kill people, people with GUNS kill people.

You can't make the music argument, because there are plenty of countries with rap and hard rock music (see the UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany). You can't blame video games either (see Japan).

We have a lot of deep-rooted anger and racism in this country. That would be enough to want to kill. Allow us to have assault weapons in our hands, and don't be surprised about our murder rates.

As an aside: All of the countries you mentioned have generally (with a few exceptions of influxes here and there) the SAME rates of burglary, theft, vandalism, etc. But their murder rates are much lower. It is extremely difficult to own guns in those countries, but very easy to do so here. Do you really need any more evidence that it is the guns that kill?

Edit: regardless of your personal politics, "Bowling for Columbine" is an excellent documentary to see. Yes, you may think of the documentarian as a wacko, (I, personally, don't even care for him myself) but he honestly gives really really great *undeniable* evidence to support his argument.

The overwhelming majority of murders using a firearm is by people that already a lengthy criminal record, and is very often drug related.

P.S.

I agree with Mike. Do you have a source?

Er...lots of guns?

To paraphrase the late Bill Hicks...there seems to be a correlation between having a gun and killing someone...and NOT having a gun and NOT killing someone.

If the committing of crime is about means, motive & opportunity, a surfeit of firearms would seem to be a case for means feeding opportunity.

Edit: I'm tryingto understand the thumbs-downers here. Are you thumbing down because you think America's firearm-related crime is not as high as has been reported? Or do you just not care?

Becuase of lax regulation on purchase of firearms. Other factors like mental illness, criminality, ease of use. European Thugs just beat the piss out of you. American thugs just shoot you and get it over with you die. Sucide by firearms are rare in Europe and common in America among the mentally ill population. Accdiental deaths from gunowners aganist criminals hurting themshevles rather than the thief.

You should really compare percentages rather than raw figures when talking about countries with such wildly different levels of population. But in answer to the question; countries that allow people to own guns are always going to pay the price in terms of murder and accidental death.

Look at the difference between Japan and America for example. Japan has a third of the population yet in the stats you quoted it has approximately 1/285 of the deaths by firearms. Japan also has one of the tightest levels of gun control in the democratic world, and anyone who denies the link between the two obviously has their head up their own ass.

How many of those deaths were criminals killing other criminals or gang related killings? How many of those other countries actually allow violent gangs to exist in their big cities? How many of the number were suicides? There are a lot of statistics not included in that number that would explain it so it might be answered intelligently.

Problem: We have too many guns and too little regulation

= Some end up on the black market

Problem: We have groups (usually minorities in urban areas with gang activity) susceptible to gun violence who purchase guns

= Higher incidence of gun crime among these groups

Problem: We have a culture that condones gun violence (see some rap music, major entertainment)

= Possible higher incident of gun violence (but I would never advocate censorship in any form so there is no way to fix this one)

The rate of gun ownership correlates to the rate of gun deaths. We see differences even among the states of the US, with higher rates of gun deaths in states that have higher rates of gun ownership.

Do you have a source for this statistic? Canada's number seems way too low (there are probably that many shooting deaths in Toronto alone), and I'm willing to bet others are too. This really sounds like some bullshit that some idiot with a blog just made up.

It`s all in the aiming of the gun. You gotta lead `em a little if they`re running! How many guns were used on 9/11? If someone wants to kill you they will do it whether they have a gun or a hammer! I own many guns and they have never killed anyone!

Mike, the city of Detroit has more gun murders annually than the entire country of Canada. It's a fact, not the "b.s." that you claim. Sorry to slap you with reality.

As for why are American numbers so high? Many things lead to this. Society in general. Our entertainment glorifies it in a lot of cases, both through movies, books, and music. Our culture embraces the tough cowboy image. Not to mention, amongst 15 to 20something men, our moral values, as a whole, including taking one's life, has slipped tremendously throughout the years.
The only thing that will curb the trend is people thinking more about someone elses life, not gun control. No govt. could strip guns away from every American, and guns will always be available through illegal means. It comes down to smarter, more caring society, not gun control. Oh, and tougher sentencing for gun offenders.

1) There is no personal accountablity.
2) We don't enforce the gun laws we have on the books.
3) Too many think more ink on paper is the solution.

More kids die in Chicago (Obama's district and home) in 4 months than those who die in all of Iraq this year.

We think it is guns are the problem it is people who are using them.
Youth who don't have any discipline ie those did Columbine.
People who don't consider the warning signs.

Look at the crimes a black kid is more likely get killed by another black kid.

Yet people believe it is the whites who do the killing of blacks.

When black parents dump their kids on the street and expect them to behave and they are shock when they join gangs.

I suggest you ask Obama why there is so much crime in his district.

If you really want the answer or do you want to blame guns?

obvious isn it here in uk we dont need to go around shooting everyone so we dont own guns
