Is there a quick select tool in gimp like there is in photoshop?

Its annoying to use the i scissors to go around and cut out objects, is there a tool in gimp similar to the tool in photoshop where you can click and drag and it selects the object very quickly? Is there a plugin that does this?
 
If you hold "alt" down and select the layer it will select the pixels on that layer. HTH
