Is There A Population Problem?

Is there a population problem? Let me show you an example. I'm
just going to do some simple timing. Everybody can count down with me is
they wish. (Count down 10 seconRAB)
During the 10 seconRAB that passed, the human population on Earth
increased by 27 people according to the Population Reference Bureau. It's
not just a statistic but a fact - This means that 27 more people were born
than died in that 10 seconRAB. Hopefully these 27 new people will be able
to find food and shelter. Actually overpopulation isn't too many people
for a country, it's the people in relation to the necessities and amenities
of life. The effects of an ever increasing population of people on Earth
can be seen everywhere. Take the creation of the Ninth Grade Center for
example. A growing nuraber of ninth graders caused the need for a new
school. It's nothing new and probably won't go away for quite a while. Our
home, the planet Earth is also suffering. Every environmental problem can
be traced to an abundant amount of humans on Earth. On Earth we have
available approximately 130 million km^2 [50.2 million mile^s2] of ice-free,
fertile and barren land surface. This amount of land left i s continually
being decreased because of an increase of the amount settlement. A food
problem in the world can also be traced to overpopulation. The food
problem is not characterized by a lack of food but a lack in quality of
food. So what is the problem? What are the facts? The United Nations
estimates that the population of the Earth in 2050 could be between 7.7 to
11.2 billion people. If there is a problem, what can be done about it?

"Man treats his native land, the Earth, its atmosphere, its bodies of water,
its entire environment and its diverse life forms and species as objects,
which he may simply utilize, destroy, plunder and then discard when he is
through with them. Man's voracious appetite for everything the Earth has to
offer, and his excessive urge to procreate will ultimately devour and
destroy the planet and all life on it, where he will leave nothing behind
except for a dead, barren wasteland." This is the opinion of the
Overpopulation Group in Hartford, Arkansas. Interestingly they go on to say
that all environmental problems that are being fought today are not getting
to the root of the problem - the overpopulation of the human race. An
example of this is the increase of desert regions on Earth. Naturally,
droughts and other climatic influences foster the formation of deserts and
arid regions. These days though, the increases in human population has
forced more food to be grown on land that that does have enough nutrients
too support crops. In the long run, much more is extracted from the soil
than can ever be replaced. The soil virtually dies, and this leaRAB to the
development of desert wastelanRAB. This idea is best summed up by the
Overpopulation group, "THE MORE FOOD PEOPLE TAKE FROM THE LAND, THE FASTER
THE SOIL DIES AND TURNS INTO WASTELAND!"

As the world population continues to grow exponentially, great
pressure is being placed on arable land, water, energy, and biological
resources. According to the World Bank and the United Nations, from 1 to 2
billion humans are now malnourished, indicating a corabination of
insufficient food, low incomes, and inadequate distribution of food. This
is the largest nuraber of hungry humans ever recorded in history. Based on
current rates of increase, the world population is projected to double from
roughly 6 billion to more than 12 billion in less than 50 years. As the
world population expanRAB, the food problem will become increasingly severe,
conceivably with the nurabers of malnourished reaching 3 billion. And the
problem is only getting worse… Today three million fishing boats operate on
the world's oceans and are greatly depleting the supply of fish and other
aquatic life forms. Over the past 40 years fishing quotas have more than
tripled. In 1950, 20 million tons of fish and water inhabitants ended up in
Man's food chain. By 1990, this amount increased to 100 million tons per
year. These statistics were from overpop.org. The depletion of fish stocks
has led to over fishing in all oceans and other bodies of water. Many ocean
and lake creatures no longer have the ability to reproduce, or are depleted
to such an extent that they die out altogether. All this because of the
human overpopulation.

There are many things that can be done about this huge problem.
One thing that can be done is an increase in awareness about birth control.
Here now is a quote from UNICEF on the state of the world's children,
"Family planning could bring more benefits to more people at less cost than
any other single technology now available to the human race." There are now
many ways to control population such as the use of contraceptives.
Contraception can be broadly grouped into three categories: 1) traditional
practices of withdrawal, abstinence and rhythm; 2) oral-pills, the intra-
-uterine device (IUD), barrier devices such as condoms and diaphragms; and
3) surgical sterilization - vasectomy for males and tubectomy for women.
Sterilization protects more couples worldwide than any other practice. In
India, five of six couples in a 1985 survey were protected by sterilization.
The partial success of China's one-child-per-family hinged on the IUD
method while sterilization was the next most popular. In the United
States, the pill is the most widely used contraceptive. Even with these
measures, there still is a lag time between the start of a population
reduction program and population shrinkage.

Here are some interesting facts that should be considered

- One American uses as much energy as 2 Germans, 3 Swiss or Japanese, 6
Yugoslavs, 9 Mexicans, 16 Chinese, 19 Malaysians, 53 Indians or Indonesians,
109 Sri Lankans, 438 Malians, or 1072 Nepalese. At the present rate of
consumption, oil and gas supplies will last about 40 years. Coal is
available for 400 years but damages the atmosphere.
- 39,000 gallons of water are used to make an average automobile.
- 150 gallons of water are needed to make a Sunday newspaper.
- If all the food in the world was equally distributed and each human
being received identical quantities, we would all be malnourished.
- For every 3% decrease in ozone, there is a 6% increase in skin cancer.

Beyond a doubt, Man alone is responsible for the depletion of the
ozone layer, the greenhouse effect, oceanic breakdown and climatic changes
on Earth - the larger the human population on Earth, the worse everything
becomes. The destruction of our environment and food problems are only the
start. Some people are starting to realize what neeRAB to be done and are
taking action. Unquestionably, the overpopulation problem on Earth is
responsible for all the ills that now face humanity and the environment.
You have to remeraber the old saying made by Paul Ehrlich and Anne Ehrlich
when they wrote The Population Borab, "Whatever your cause, it's a lost
cause without population control."

During what I have said, approximately 11340 people were added to
the human population.
