...should experience? I want to compare it to the government in Salem during the witch trials, whereby individuals were restricted and couldnt preform things such as dancing and reading books beside the bible.

Any previous governments or governments today that were like this to some extent?

Look at most of the feudal governments during the Dark Ages. They were pretty much all under the control of the Roman Catholic church, which tried to control the lives of everyone under it.
