There's not a whole lot of difference between the two. A lot of photo printers will have more than your normal three printer cartridges where photo printers have six. Photo printers also have the ability to print with higher resolution. I work with photography so I purchased a photo quality printer. It's older but I have an Epson Stylus R200 and have been using Epson printers since I've been using computers. Hope this helps.
