is there a better way of fixing the timing on my car?

i own a 1973 plymouth sebring and i nocked the distributer when i was tightening the fan belts,turns out it was loose and can still rotate,so i am trying to start my car and turning the distributer slightly trying to get it to work,is there a better way does anyone else understand,id like to try to find out before i ask a mechanic
