Is ther a book or something that will aquaint me with all I need to know about

motorcycles before purchasing? Before purchasing one? Like, I don't want to be stupid and just purchase a motorcycle because I think it looks good. I want to educate myself on the subject. And like I'm a teenager, so I don't have a lot of experience driving. I do intend on taking classes before going on the road, because I refuse to put myself, and others on the road in danger. So, is there like a book or a website that will tell me all I need to know about motorcycles, or like when you go to purchase one, does the dealer tell you all you need to know? Are motorcycle classes expensive? Oh and last question, is a V-Star Classic a good starting bike, if I take the motorcycle course?
 
First off, thank you for being one of the smarter people on here and not saying something like, "i'm 17 and know nothing about motorcycles. I'm going to get a gsx-r1000 and don't need a class".

Now, a good source of information, as far as mainanence, would be a discussion board about the brand of motorcycle you get. You can ask questions about the bike and owners of the exact same bike can answer your questions from first hand experience. The service department at the dealer will also give you some help if you run into a problem after you buy it.

What i usually do when i am looking to buy a new vehicle is look for reviews on it from magezines. Type something like "yamaha v-star classic review" in a search engine and see what magazines say about it. They'll usually list all the specs, pros, cons and give their overall opinion on it. If nothing else you can just repeat what you read in the magazines so dealers won't treat you like an idiot (they do sometimes, trust me).

There's lots of info in print and on the net. You may want to look at Motorcycle Consumer News.

Visit dealers and tell them you're looking at a competing brand and make them tell you why you should buy the brand they sell. Look beyond price and warranty.
For instance, while the cost of the bike is pretty low, the VStar requires fairly frequent valve adjusment while others have "self adjusting" valves.. The cost of maintaining a bike may be a factor for you.


Call your local DPS or DMV and ask where the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course is being taught. Its around $150, more if you take the version offered at Harley-Davidson dealerships.
 
Just go to the moto site and im sure u can learn a lot from that...
